The World Health Organization (WHO) officially released a China-WHO joint study on novel coronavirus tracing in Geneva on July 30. The report said it was “highly unlikely” that the novel coronavirus had passed from human to human in the laboratory.

On January 14 of this year, 17 Chinese and 17 foreign experts formed a joint expert group, which was divided into three groups: epidemiology, molecular traceability, and animal and environment. They carried out a 28-day global traceability research in Wuhan, China, and wrote a research report on this basis.

The panel assessed four possible pathways for the introduction of the novel coronavirus into humans and concluded that it is “very likely” to be transmitted to humans via an intermediate host, “likely” to “very likely” to be transmitted directly to humans, “likely” to be transmitted to humans via cold-chain food, and “very unlikely” to be transmitted to humans in the laboratory.

Joint panel report put forward the next step research proposal, including the establishment of global unified database, in the broader global continue to look for possible early cases, by the global scientists are looking for could be many more virus host animal species, to learn more about cold chain and frozen food role in the spread of the virus process, etc.

WHO held a briefing with Member States on the report that day. Peter Embarek, the foreign team leader of the Joint Expert Group, introduced the field work and joint research of the Joint Expert Group in Wuhan, and thanked the Chinese government and scientists for their support for the traceback cooperation.

Liang Wannian, the head of the Chinese panel, said that the report is the result of the joint efforts of Chinese and foreign experts and represents the joint efforts of both Chinese and foreign experts in the joint panel. The JGT has always been guided by a scientific mindset and carried out evidence-based research cooperation. The tracing of novel coronavirus in China is a part of the global tracing, which is also the first step. All conclusions and suggestions of the report are based ona global perspective, and future research will not be limited to a certain region.

Ambassador Chen Xu, China’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, said Chinese and WHO international experts have demonstrated a scientific and open spirit. Chinese governments at all levels have provided necessary assistance for the successful work of the Expert Group in Wuhan, which fully demonstrates China’s open, transparent and responsible attitude and has been highly appreciated and fully recognized by experts from both sides. Traceability is a scientific issue and should be carried out by global scientists in cooperation. Tracing the source of the virus is also a global task. The China-WHO joint study will facilitate the tracing of the virus in many countries around the world, provide positive and beneficial guidance, and provide a scientific guide for mankind to better understand the virus.
