BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) — A Long March 5B rocket lifted China’s space station and its core module into orbit Wednesday, the first launch in the construction phase of the country’s space station, Xinhua reported. Overseas media have spoken highly of this, saying that China has taken a big step towards the goal of having a manned space station built and operated independently.

Nearly 30 years after putting forward a “three-step” strategy for its manned space program, China has begun to realize its dream of having its own space “outpost,” DPA reported Wednesday. It quoted Reinhold Ewald, a former German astronaut and professor at the Institute of Space Systems at the University of Stuttgart, as saying the space station shows the breadth of a country’s space technology, and that the Chinese space station could test what technologies humans would need on their way to the moon and Mars.

If the current orbiting International Space Station is retired as planned in the next few years, China may become the only country with a permanent orbiting space station in space for some time, the report added.

The Tianhe core module is the first Chinese space station module to be launched into space, and China is gradually completing its space station strategy, German newspaper Die Welt said on its website. By international comparison, China has long been promoted from a “novice” to a “master class” in the space field thanks to its own manned flight and other practices. As with the International Space Station, scientific research will also be a major focus of China’s space station plans. The article also said that China has opened the door to international cooperation in space technology, while the United States has never allowed Chinese access to the International Space Station.

China is ramping up its space program, including a lunar exploration program, a Mars probe and a space station, Reuters reported Wednesday.

The successful launch marked the first time in China’s space history that a space module has been launched, Japan’s Shimbun News Agency reported Wednesday. China has taken a big step towards its goal of building a permanent manned space station. Each component of the Chinese space station will be launched in several times and assembled in orbit at an altitude of 400 to 450 kilometers above the Earth. The Chinese government welcomes cooperation in space research with foreign research institutions.

China has successfully launched the country’s first permanent space station core module, the latest achievement in the project, the Australian Associated Press reported Wednesday. The launch marks another major advance in China’s space exploration and will push forward a series of follow-up missions, including the construction and supply of a space station and the launch of a manned spacecraft.
