On May 28 local time, a U.S. federal court blocked the tariff policy announced by President Donald Trump on April 2 (“Liberation Day”) from taking effect, ruling that the President overstepped his authority by imposing blanket tariffs on countries that export more to the U.S. than they import.
The U.S. Court of International Trade in Manhattan, New York, stated that the U.S. Constitution grants Congress the exclusive power to regulate trade with other nations. It further ruled that the emergency powers invoked by the President to protect the U.S. economy do not supersede this congressional authority. This decision represents the first major legal challenge to Trump’s tariff policy.
